In the world of Bollywood, the art of portraying diverse characters is a delicate balance between authenticity and charisma. Filmmaker Priyadarshan recently weighed in on this intriguing dichotomy, highlighting the contrasting screen personas of two iconic stars: Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar. While Akshay Kumar effortlessly embodies the role of an everyday man, Shah Rukh Khan's polished, urban persona sometimes hinders his ability to convincingly portray more rooted, rural characters.
In an interview with India Today, Priyadarshan shed light on Akshay's remarkable talent for blending into the role of a common man. He praised Akshay's body language and mannerisms, particularly in the film 'Khatta Meetha', where he portrayed a struggling road contractor. Priyadarshan noted that Akshay's understanding of ordinary life and his ability to live as an ordinary man make him a master of portraying relatable characters.
On the other hand, Priyadarshan discussed Shah Rukh's polished, urban persona, which he believes limits his range. During their collaboration on 'Billu Barber', Shah Rukh struggled to connect with the rural setting, admitting his lack of familiarity with village life due to his upbringing in Delhi. This polished body language, according to Priyadarshan, makes it challenging for Shah Rukh to fully embody the role of a villager.
Priyadarshan's storytelling style, often rooted in the struggles of ordinary people, adds a layer of depth to his commentary. He refers to his humor as the 'humor of life, humor of poverty', emphasizing the desperation and hardships faced by his characters. This approach is evident in his previous works, such as 'Hera Pheri', which he describes as a comedy of poverty.
As Priyadarshan prepares for the release of his upcoming film 'Bhooth Bangla', headlined by Akshay Kumar, the director's insights into the art of character portrayal continue to offer valuable perspectives on the craft of filmmaking. The film, featuring a stellar cast including Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav, Tabu, and Wamiqa Gabbi, is set to captivate audiences on April 16th.
