Former boxing champion Sion Yaxley has been handed a three-year football ban for using homophobic slurs at a match. The Welsh speaker, who held the IBO Intercontinental Super Welterweight title in 2023, was found guilty of abusive behavior towards a fellow supporter. His defense solicitor argued that Yaxley did not fully comprehend the meaning of the slurs, but the judge found this claim 'hard to believe'.
The incident has had significant repercussions for Yaxley. He has lost his well-paid job with a security firm and now works at a warehouse. His community has also taken notice, as he was previously recognized for mentoring young boxers. The judge emphasized that Yaxley's actions have tarnished his good character in the community.
The ban has been imposed to prevent Yaxley from attending any regulated football matches in the UK for three years. This includes avoiding any town or city where Wrexham or Wales are playing, as well as international games involving UK nations. Additionally, Yaxley has been fined £250 and must pay a surcharge of £100 and costs of £85.
Another individual, Joshua Jones, 33, was also present in court for the same offense. Jones, a building site manager and father of two, pleaded guilty to using threatening, abusive, or insulting words or behavior with the intent to cause fear or provoke unlawful violence. He was fined £500, with a £200 surcharge and £85 costs, and received the same three-year football ban as Yaxley.
These cases highlight the serious consequences of homophobic behavior in sports. It is crucial to address and condemn such actions to create a more inclusive and respectful environment for all fans. The courts are sending a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated, and those found guilty will face severe penalties.
